CommonsDB Final Conference

The final conference of the CommonsDB project will take place on 14 September 2026. It will be hosted by the EUIPO in Alicante within the context of its Copyright Knowledge Centre—a neutral platform for cooperation on copyright at the EU level. The conference will be livestreamed, and a recording will be available online afterward.

Structured as a one-day session, the conference will combine strategic discussions with a practical presentation of the project outcomes, demonstrating how scalable registry concepts can integrate into the broader copyright landscape. The program is tailored specifically for stakeholders involved in European copyright infrastructure.

10:00 AM | Welcome & Opening Remarks

  • Speaker: Harrie Temmink (EUIPO)
  • Focus: Setting the scene with a short introduction to the EUIPO's work under the Copyright Knowledge Centre. This will highlight the Centre's role as a neutral EU-level hub to connect information resources, stakeholders, and technical solutions in the AI era—including support for cultural heritage institutions through the Out-of-Commerce Works Portal and the Orphan Works Database.

10:15 AM | Session 1: CommonsDB Project Results

  • Speakers: Doug McCarthy (Open Future), Karin Glasemann (Wikimedia Sverige), and Sebastian Posth (Liccium)
  • Focus: A launch-style presentation showcasing the project's primary achievements. Consortium members will demonstrate how the CommonsDB prototype successfully processed over 5 million declarations from multiple data providers within an 18-month timeframe.

11:30 AM | Session 2: State of the ISCC

  • Focus: A technology and architecture-focused panel evaluating CommonsDB as the first at-scale public prototype registry using the ISCC. The discussion will explore practical institutional workflows, insights from CommonsDB’s development, and emerging technical solutions for federated, multi-registry discoverability.

2:00 PM | Session 3: EU Copyright Infrastructure & Strategy

  • Panelists: Krzysztof Nichczynski (European Commission – DG CNECT), João Pedro Quintais (IViR), Luna Schumacher (Pictoright), Anna Vuopala (CITF), and AI Developer (TBC).
  • Moderator: Paul Keller (Open Future)
  • Focus: A panel exploring Text and Data Mining (TDM) opt-out registries and the broader outlook for EU copyright infrastructure. This session will also feature a presentation by European Commission staff on the findings of a recent study exploring the feasibility of a central registry for TDM opt-outs.
